Crawford County Freedom Rock
Located in the center of town, at the intersection of 5th St and 4th Ave
The Crawford County Freedom Rock is a veterans memorial mural painted as part of the Iowa Freedom Rock Tour, a project started in 1999 by veteran-artist Ray Sorensen II. The tour expanded in 2013 with a new goal of creating a unique rock mural for every county in Iowa. Each Freedom Rock tells a local story, honoring the contributions of veterans from that area with artwork that reflects its people and its history.
Klondike Hotel
332 3rd Ave, Manilla, IA 51454
The Klondike Hotel is Manilla's most significant piece of early history. Built in 1897, the historic hotel once served as the premier resting place for weary railroad workers and travelers. Today, the hotel stands in Manilla as a preserved symbol of one of America's most historic time periods. From architecture, to furniture, to door numbers, the hotel has retained as many of it's original features as possible. To us, the Klondike is more than a museum though; the building is a special place where our city's past and present are able to connect.
Milwaukee Road Caboose Meseum
Located uptown inside Bandshell Park
The Milwaukee Road Caboose Museum offers visitors another intimate look into Manilla's railroad history. Situated along what was once a bustling Milwaukee Co. rail line, the museum is housed inside of a restored Milwaukee Co. train caboose. The museum allows guests to step back in time and experience what travel was like during the railroad period. Inside the caboose as well, you'll find original equipment, artifacts, and interpretive displays that tell Manilla's role in shaping Iowa's railroad history. For museum hours, contact City Hall at (712)-654-2632.
